Changing Your Doorknob

Items needed

  • Measuring tape
  • Screwdriver
  • New doorknob

1. Measure then choose the knob

Many doorknobs are the same size, so it’s easy to switch them, but it’s always a good idea to check. Choose your replacement knob after determining the size you’ll require.

2. Take out the old knob

This could be the most difficult aspect, depending on the knob you have. On the interior plate of some knobs, there are just two screws. If so, simply unscrew them before carefully separating the knobs from one another. Your knob is probably held in place by a covert latch if there are no visible screws on it. Use the tip of a pen or tweezers to press into a small groove that you may find at the knob’s base. The knob should come off as a result, exposing a screw. Remove knobs by unscrewing them.

3. Take off the cover and the latch

The doorknob’s non-knob parts will be discussed next. Pull off the front panel (the little metal piece on the edge of the door itself, which the latch or bolt sticks through). Once this is removed, the latch (and any inside mechanism) can be withdrawn via the opening.

4. Take out the strike plate

The metal plate on the door frame that the latch engages is called a striking plate, and it has joined the knob as an essential part of your door’s hardware. Screws will secure it in place. You should take that out as well.

5. Replace the front panel

To replace the knob, you will need to do a series of backward motions. Start with the action you just performed on the former knob. Place the cover plate over the latch and internal mechanism, then screw it into place via the door’s pre-cut hole. You don’t need the plastic piece that comes with some doorknobs to hold the internal components in place during installation.

6: Replace the front of the knob with the new one.

You need to figure out which knob is the one that faces outward (it will have a different spindle that threads through the door). Hold it in place and make sure it’s aligned while.

7. Attach the new knob’s back.

If you don’t have the plastic component, just make sure both knobs can be turned while being flush to the door. Align the back or interior knob with the front one so you can press both flush to the door. Screw the back plate in now while keeping them in place, making sure it’s snug. Verify that both sides of the knob can be turned.

8. Install the new strike plate

Last but not least, attach the new strike plate to the door frame. At last, a new entrance!
